Q. What is the Meaning of"8th cousin 2 times removed"?
A. Let us draw it out. Assume two lines. John 2 is the son of John 1, and Mary 2 is the daughter of Mary 1, and so on for 11 generations. Assume also that John and Mary's families have little imagination when it comes to naming children.
John 1 + Mary 1 = siblings
John 2 + Mary 2 = 1st cousins
John 3 + Mary 3 = 2nd cousins (children of 1C's are 2C's)
John 4 + Mary 4 = 3rd cousins
John 5 + Mary 5 = 4th cousins
John 6 + Mary 6 = 5th cousins
John 7 + Mary 7 = 6th cousins
John 8 + Mary 8 = 7th cousins
John 9 + Mary 9 = 8th cousins
John 10 + Mary 10 = 9th cousins
John 11 + Mary 11 = 10th cousins
John 11 is two levels down - twice removed - from John 9. John 9 is John 11's grandfather. John 9 is also Mary 9's 8th cousin. John 11 is, therefore, Mary 9's 8th cousin twice removed.
