Red Velvet Cake

Aunt Kathy’s Red Velvet Cake

(The REAL Deal)

½ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs
½ cup red food coloring (Expensive but worth it!)
2 tsp Cocoa
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Salt
1 Cup buttermilk
2 ¼ cups sifted flour
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp baking soda

  1. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy
  2. Add eggs one at a time.
  3. Beat 1 minute.
  4. Mix Cocoa and coloring in a cup to make a paste.
  5. Add to the above
  6. Put Vanilla in buttermilk and add slowly to mixture.
    Alternate milk and flour
  7. Mix vinegar and soda in cup.
    Add to mixture.

Put in two 9” pans

Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 min

(The REAl Deal)

1 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour

  1. Cook the paste
  2. Then cool till cold! (you cannot rush this)
  3. In a separate bowl
  4. 1 cup butter (real)
  5. 1 cup sifted powder sugar
  6. 1 tsp. Vanilla
